Container versus codec

A video file has two layers. The container (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM) is the box. The codec (H.264, HEVC, VP9, AAC, Opus) is how the picture and sound inside the box are compressed. Many “conversions” only need a new box. An iPhone MOV usually already contains H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, which an MP4 can hold as is.

With Fastest possible, the converter checks the codecs first. If they fit the target container, it copies them without touching a single frame: no quality loss, and it finishes in seconds. If they don’t fit, for example WMV to MP4, or anything to WebM, the video is re-encoded.

Which format should I pick?

MP4 is the safe default for phones, social platforms, editors and email.
WebM (VP9) is made for the web. It is often smaller than H.264 at the same quality, but older Apple devices and some editors can’t open it. See MP4 vs WebM.
MOV is Apple’s container. Pick it when software on a Mac asks for it.
MKV is flexible and popular for archives and media players, but browsers and phones support it poorly.

Choose Always re-encode when a copied file does not play on your target device, for example an HEVC video on an older Windows PC. Re-encoding converts it to H.264, which nearly everything can decode.

How do I convert MOV to MP4?

Can I convert WebM to MP4?

Yes. WebM uses VP8 or VP9, which MP4 players rarely support, so the video is re-encoded to H.264 automatically.

Does converting reduce quality?

Not when streams are copied. When a re-encode is needed, high-quality settings are used, so the difference is hard to see. To also shrink the file, run the result through the compressor.

Why does WebM conversion take longer?

VP9 is a slower codec to encode than H.264. Expect WebM conversion to take several times longer than MP4.

Can I convert to AVI or WMV?

No. These older formats are not offered as outputs. MP4 plays everywhere they did and produces smaller files.
