Remove the audio from a video
Mute a video without touching its picture. The video track is copied as it is, so the result keeps the original quality and is ready in seconds.
How to remove the audio
- Add your video, or up to five at once.
- Press Remove the audio.
- Download the muted video. There are no settings: the tool does one thing.
Why it is so fast and loses nothing
A video file is a container holding separate tracks: one for the picture, one for the sound, sometimes more. Muting a video only needs the picture track to be written into a new file, without decoding or re-encoding it. That is why the result looks identical to the original and a long clip finishes in seconds.
This works when the picture uses H.264 or HEVC (most phone and camera videos) or VP8, VP9 and AV1 in a WebM or MKV file. For anything else, such as old AVI or WMV files, the video is re-encoded to H.264 MP4 so the result still plays everywhere.
Common reasons to mute a video
- Background footage or a website banner that should loop silently.
- A clip with copyrighted music you do not want to publish.
- A recording that picked up private conversation.
- Replacing the soundtrack in an editor: start from a clean, silent picture.
If you only want the sound quieter, use Change video volume. If you want the sound as a file, use Video to MP3.
Questions about Remove audio from video
Does removing the audio reduce quality?
No. The picture is copied without being re-encoded, so it is bit-for-bit what you uploaded. Only the sound track is left out.
Will the file be smaller?
Yes, by the size of the audio. That is usually 5 to 10 percent of a phone video.
What if my video has no sound?
The tool tells you before processing that there is no sound track to remove.
Can I mute only part of the video?
Not yet. You can trim the video into parts, mute the ones you want, and join them with Merge videos.
