Change the volume of a video

Boost a video that is too quiet, lower one that is too loud, or even out the loudness. Add a fade in or fade out if you want a softer start or end.

Files are deleted automatically after 60 minutes.

Above 100% loud parts can distort. “Normalize” evens the loudness out instead.

How to change the volume

  1. Add your video, or up to five at once.
  2. Choose a volume. 100% is the original, 150% is half as loud again, 50% is half the level.
  3. Optionally set a fade in and a fade out, in seconds.
  4. Press Apply the volume and download the result.

Louder, quieter or normalized

Volume changes multiply the sound by a fixed amount. That is simple and predictable, but it has one catch: when you go above 100%, the loudest parts can hit the ceiling and distort. If your video is quiet throughout, 150% to 200% usually works. If the voice is quiet but a few moments are loud, boosting will make those moments crackle.

Normalize is smarter. It measures the loudness of the whole video and brings it to a standard level used by streaming services, turning down what is too loud and lifting what is too quiet. It is the best choice for interviews, lectures and phone recordings where some parts are much quieter than others. It takes a little longer than a fixed change.

Fades

A fade in raises the sound smoothly from silence at the start; a fade out lowers it to silence at the end. They hide abrupt starts and cut-off endings. The two fades together cannot be longer than the video.

The picture is not touched: for most phone and camera videos it is copied as it is, and only the sound is processed. To remove the sound completely, use Remove audio from video.

Questions about Change video volume

Why does the sound crackle when I boost it a lot?

Above 100% the loudest parts exceed what the audio can hold and are clipped. Lower the boost, or use Normalize, which balances the level instead of just multiplying it.

What does normalize do?

It brings the whole video to a standard loudness, so quiet parts are lifted and loud parts are lowered. It does not make clipped sound clean again.

Does it change the video quality?

No. The picture is copied as it is for most videos, and only the audio track is re-encoded.

Can I change the volume of only a part of the video?

Not yet. Trim the part, change its volume, then rejoin the clips with Merge videos.
