Rotate or flip a video
Fix a phone video that plays sideways or upside down, or mirror a selfie clip so text reads the right way round.
How to rotate a video
- Add your video and check the preview to see which way it is turned.
- Choose 90° right if the top of the picture currently points left, 90° left if it points right, or 180° if it is upside down.
- Choose Mirror to swap left and right, which is useful for front-camera clips.
- Press Rotate video and download.
Why phone videos play sideways
Phones always record with the sensor in the same position and add a small rotation flag that tells players how to turn the picture. Some apps, older editors and websites ignore the flag, so the video appears sideways. When you upload, the tool reads that flag, shows the video the right way up in the preview, and applies your rotation on top of it. The result has the rotation applied to the pixels themselves, so it plays correctly everywhere, flag or not.
The metadata viewer shows whether a file carries a rotation flag.
Questions about Rotate and flip
The preview already looks correct. Why does it play sideways elsewhere?
The original file probably uses a rotation flag that the other app ignores. Choose no rotation by running it through the converter with “Always re-encode”. This bakes the correct orientation into the pixels.
Is the sound affected?
No. Audio is kept and re-encoded to AAC alongside the rotated video.
Can I rotate by any angle, like 45°?
Not currently. Only quarter turns and flips are offered, because they don’t crop or blur the picture.
